Facebook to Buy WhatsApp for $16 Billion Plus $3b In Stock

Social media giant Facebook has just made a surprise announcement few minutes ago in a blog post that they are set to buy leading instant messaging giant WHATSAPP for a whopping sum of $16 billion.

Facebook to Buy WhatsApp

Facebook to better explain the deal highlighted some key metrics of whatsapp that got their interest: it is estimated that whatsapp has over 450 million people using it worldwide of which 70% of them are active.

Whatsapp is growing very fast and it’s on the path to connect 1 billion people worldwide. Any services that can reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable,” said Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook. Am excited to partner with Jan and his team to make the world more open and connected because I’ve known Jan Koum for a long time.

An awesome amount of $2 billion will be paid to whatsapp founders latter this year ($1 billion in Class A common stock, $1 billion in cash) should things fail as a result of failure of obtaining the required regulatory approvals.
